Dorset Buttons in February



The making of Dorset Buttons was part of the cottage industry in England for over two centuries, employing over 4,000 women and children, and a total of 7,000 articans at its peak until the button making machine was invented in 1860.
In this class you will lean the basic technique for a cross wheel button design and go home with instructions, and additional resources and ideas for design options. 

Class kits will include materials for (2) one inch buttons. 

Besides being used as a colorful and unique button, Dorset buttons can be made into earrings, pins, necklaces, ornaments, quilt embellishments and many other creative uses.

Notes: Please bring scissors and arrive about 10-15 minutes prior to class to choose your thread color.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Must be able to do repetitive motions with hands and wrists.
Requirements: Please bring scissors. 18+ years of age
Instructor: Becky Smith
Instructor Bio: Becky Smith has been doing various crafts as long as she can remember. In college she learned to quilt with a friend and that has been her primary crafty outlet ever since. Through quilting she was introduced to Dorset Buttons as an embellishment, which then led to an interest in historic passimenterie. Becky works in the Juniata County School district as a history teacher, and enjoys combining history with the handiwork of the past and present. She lives outside Newport with her husband and their pets. They enjoy camping, cruising and travel.
